LAGOS, Nigeria - A 70-year-old man, Isiaka Afolayan, has been detained for careless driving and the manslaughter of a 14-year-old boy.
Afolayan appeared in court on Monday at the Badagry Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos.
He faces charges of manslaughter and reckless driving, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, informed the court that the alleged incidents occurred on April 22 at 3:30 p.m. in Badagry.
He stated that the defendant operated an SUV with registration number AGL 122 BJ recklessly, leading to the boy's death.
The prosecutor mentioned that Afolayan drove dangerously on a public road, showing no consideration for other drivers, which resulted in the tragic incident.
These actions violate Sections 27 and 19 of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 124, Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria.
Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni set bail for the accused at N1,000,000, requiring two sureties of equivalent amount.
The sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and have stable employment. The hearing has been scheduled for July 9.
