A heartbreaking case of matricide has rocked the Dantanoma quarters in Gumel Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where a 30-year-old man, Hussaini Abubakar, murdered his mother.

The tragic event took place on Sunday, June 29, 2025, around 8:00 pm, when the Gumel Divisional Police Headquarters received an urgent report of a violent altercation involving a mother and her son.

In a statement released to reporters in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State, on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, it was revealed that the suspect brutally killed his 75-year-old mother, Dahara Mu’azu.

The statement indicated, "Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered that the suspect had violently attacked and killed his mother by repeatedly hitting her head with mud blocks.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries and was quickly taken to Gumel General Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, medical personnel confirmed that she had succumbed to her injuries on June 30, 2025."

According to the PPRO, Abubakar has been arrested and is currently in police custody, cooperating with investigators.

He will be charged in court once a thorough investigation is completed.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ahmad Abdullahi, condemned the act in the strongest terms, labeling it as inhuman, barbaric, and completely unacceptable.

He has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to oversee the case and ensure the suspect faces the full consequences of the law.

The Jigawa State Police Command expressed their deep sadness over the incident and urged the public to report early signs of mental health crises or domestic violence to the nearest police station or community leaders to avert such tragedies.

SP Adam reiterated the command's commitment to enforcing law and order, protecting lives, and ensuring justice for crime victims throughout the state.

He urged the public to assist the police in maintaining peace and security. The community is reeling from the incident, with many demanding justice for the victim and her family.

A neighbor of the victim, Sule Baba, expressed his shock over the brutal killing, stating, "I am horrified by the cruelty displayed by a son towards his own mother."

He added, “As a community, we are appalled and distressed by this dreadful act, and we insist on justice for the victim and her family. Authorities must act swiftly and decisively to ensure the suspect is held accountable.”

Aminu Lawan, another community member, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This incident serves as a wake-up call for our community leaders and law enforcement to take proactive measures in addressing mental health issues and domestic disputes.”

Lawan urged the Jigawa State Police Command and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice is achieved.
