A court in the United Kingdom has sentenced 27-year-old Oguzcan Dereli to 24 years in prison for the murder of young footballer Abdul-Latif Pouget.
Dereli, who was implicated in mobile phone theft, was found guilty of causing Pouget's death after an altercation escalated into violence.
The judge, Sarah Whitehouse, noted that the severity of the crime was increased due to Dereli's prior convictions and efforts to flee from police during the investigation.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Whitehouse highlighted that the attacker, from Alexander Road in Islington, north London, severely damaged the victim's artery, leading to his collapse on the pavement and significant blood loss.
Prosecutor Danny Robbinson stated that despite paramedics' attempts to save Pouget, he succumbed to his injuries, which has left his family and loved ones devastated.
In her verdict, the judge sentenced Dereli to a minimum of 24 years for murder and an additional two years for possessing an offensive weapon, with both sentences to run concurrently.
