An armed man was shot and killed outside the Hendricks County Courthouse on Monday afternoon, prompting a large police response and an ongoing investigation led by the Indiana State Police.
The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Main and Cross streets in downtown Danville, a small town of fewer than 12,000 residents located about 25 miles west of Indianapolis.
According to authorities, two Hendricks County sheriff’s deputies were escorting multiple inmates from a transport van into the courthouse when a man approached and pulled a gun, pointing it toward the deputies and the inmates.
Both deputies fired at the suspect, striking him at least once. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. As of 2:30 p.m., his body remained on the courthouse grounds. No officers, inmates, or bystanders were injured in the shooting.
Danville Police confirmed on Facebook that a "large police presence" was established at the courthouse in response to the incident. “At this time, there is no danger to the public,” the department said. “However, we are asking everyone to avoid the area while the investigation is underway.”
Capt. Jim Yetter of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the shooting but did not release further details about the suspect or the sequence of events.
The sheriff’s office also noted that inmate transports do not occur on a fixed schedule.
The Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation and are currently reviewing security camera footage that reportedly captured the entire incident.
Authorities continue to process the scene, and while the area remains secure, officials expect an active law enforcement presence in the vicinity for several hours.
