KASTINA, Nigeria - The village chief of Mantau in Yarmaulu, Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State, has been removed from his position by the Emir of Daura, Faruq Faruq, due to accusations of kidnapping and sexual assault.
This action came after increased public outcry and a protest led by local youths in Yarmaulu, following formal complaints made to the Daura Emirate Council by residents.
The frustrated youths alleged that Mantau and others had kidnapped a woman named Zulaihatu along with her child, claiming that after demanding a ₦20 million ransom, the attackers raped the victim.
The incident sparked widespread outrage in the Katsina community, particularly regarding the Emirate's perceived inaction, which had prolonged disciplinary measures for almost a year while the case was already in court.
In announcing the decision, the Emir of Daura emphasized that the Emirate would not tolerate injustice or misuse of authority by traditional leaders.
“If anyone feels aggrieved, even if it is my own child who is at fault, they should step forward and submit their complaint to the Emirate. This Emirate serves the people,” said the Emir.
“This Emirate has a history of removing a traditional leader it appointed, and even Sarki Abdurrahman once imprisoned his own son for misdeeds. That is why we will never accept the mistreatment of anyone,” he continued.
The Emir also confirmed that Iliya Mantau’s dismissal would take effect immediately from Monday and assured that a new village head dedicated to justice and moral integrity would be appointed soon.
He cautioned against the dissemination of unfounded rumors and encouraged residents to adhere to the law, highlighting the importance of following appropriate legal processes to voice their concerns.
