LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State Government has announced that the increasing traffic from heavy trucks on the Lekki-Epe corridor has led to the implementation of a technology-driven electronic call-up system.

Transportation Commissioner, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared this information on Sunday through a statement by Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola,  at the Ministry of Transportation.

Osiyemi indicated that the enforcement of the e-call-up system will commence on Monday, June 16, aimed at managing truck traffic in the affected area.

The Lekki-Epe axis is home to significant investments, including the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Deep Sea Port, and important oil and gas facilities, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Due to the presence of a single main exit route, Osiyemi pointed out that industrial growth has exacerbated congestion in the region. He noted that immediate and proactive traffic management strategies are necessary to tackle the deteriorating situation on the corridor.

Currently, between 360 and 400 trucks operate daily, but this number could rise sharply with the full operations of the Dangote Refinery.

He stated that the refinery alone could send out between 3,000 and 4,000 trucks each day, underlining the importance of regulation.

The e-call-up system will facilitate the organized scheduling of truck movements to minimize disorder on the roads.

"Truck operators must register online and submit their Authority to Load (ATL) documents for verification.

Only validated and approved trucks will be allowed to enter designated parks and will receive an electronic call-up notification before heading to their loading destinations," he explained.

Osiyemi added that this initiative aims to decrease illegal parking, enhance traffic flow, and safeguard road infrastructure along the corridor. He characterized the program as a significant step in revamping logistics and transportation management throughout Lagos, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Lekki-Epe. Osiyemi urged all stakeholders to voluntarily comply with the system to ensure its effectiveness and alleviate traffic problems in the area.
