President Bola Tinubu has promised the Super Falcons a grand celebration when they return from Morocco, where the team clinched the WAFCON title for a record 10th time on Saturday.
The Super Falcons made a remarkable comeback at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat the host nation Morocco 3-2 and secure the 2024 championship.
Morocco initially took the lead in the 12th minute through the tournament's top scorer, Ghizlane Chebbak, and extended their advantage with a goal from Sanaâ Mssoudy in the 24th minute.
However, Nigeria mounted a determined second-half effort. Esther Okoronkwo cut the deficit with a penalty in the 64th minute and then assisted Folasade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Jennifer Echegini completed the comeback with a goal in the 88th minute after connecting with Okoronkwo’s high free kick.
Tinubu celebrated the team's success during a video call with the players and officials on Saturday. “As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy.
You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and management of the team, including the ministers and officials. To achieve this victory for the 10th time is a significant accomplishment for the country and the continent as a whole. Have a safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves, and stay injury-free,”
Tinubu remarked. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude to the President for approving their bonuses and promised to present the trophy in Abuja, to which Tinubu responded, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
Earlier, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the team’s performance as a reflection of the resilience and fighting spirit of Nigerians.
“The Super Falcons’ impressive performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a determined Moroccan team in front of their passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that embodies the Nigerian spirit. Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, you have fulfilled a mission that the nation hoped for and prayed for.
The nation eagerly awaits the return of our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria is proud of you,” he added.
This thrilling victory marks the 10th continental title for the Falcons, adding to their past triumphs in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
