President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University.
During a special Federal Executive Council session at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, Tinubu stated, “May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University.”
He paid tribute to the late president, calling him “a good man, a decent man, and an honourable man,” and noted that Buhari's legacy of discipline, patriotism, and moral integrity would last for generations.
Tinubu acknowledged the late president’s imperfections but emphasized that his steadfast dedication to national service distinguished him.
Reflecting on Buhari's presidency and extensive military and civil service, Tinubu commended the simplicity, humility, and resilience against the allure of power that Buhari exhibited.
He remarked, “He stood, always, ramrod straight; unaffected by the temptations of power, immune to applause, and unbothered by the solitude that often accompanies righteousness.”
He characterized Buhari’s courage as quiet and his patriotism as demonstrated through actions rather than words.
Tinubu also reminisced about their political partnership that led to the historic 2015 elections, signifying Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power between ruling parties.
He described how, upon taking office, Buhari governed with restraint and dignity, handling the responsibilities of leadership with grace.
The President recognized Buhari’s humility post-presidency, mentioning that he returned to his hometown of Daura without attempting to exert influence or control.
In his concluding tribute, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda for arranging an appropriate state funeral within 48 hours, stating it was a “great honour” to lead the burial procession in Daura.
He ended with a prayer: “Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, the Farmer President, your duty is done.
May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. May his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.
President Buhari, thank you. Nigeria will remember you.” Buhari passed away on July 13 at the age of 82.
