It is believed that he was held captive by the National Liberation Army (ELN), a guerrilla group that has been active in Colombia for decades.

Diaz's father was abducted in the northern Colombian town of Barrancas.

He was reportedly taken by armed men while he was driving home from work in La Guajira with his wife.

Diaz's family had been pleading for his release, and they had offered a reward for his safe return.

They had also been holding protests and calling on the Colombian government to do more to secure his release.

The Colombian Football Federation confirmed the release of Diaz's father in a statement:

The Colombian Football Federation thanks the national government, the military forces and the national police, as well as all the institutions and officials that made the release of Luis Manuel Diaz, father of our player Luis Diaz, possible.

Diaz's father's release is a relief to his family and to the Colombian people. It is a reminder that even in the face of violence and conflict, there is always hope.

Luis Diaz can now fully play again

Diaz was away for a while due to the abduction of his father, where he missed Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest's match.

He, however, returned to Liverpool to play against Luton Town that ended a 1-1 draw.

Diaz scored a late equalizer after being subbed on.

He then revealed a message on his shirt "libertad para papa", when translated read "Freedom For Papa".
