The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced a 4 percent fee based on the free-on-board (FOB) value of imports.
NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada made this announcement in a statement on Wednesday. He clarified that this decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCSA) 2023.
"According to Section 18 (1) of NCSA 2023, the NCS is implementing a 4 percent charge on the Free On-Board (FOB) value of imports.
This FOB charge is calculated on the total value of imported items, encompassing the cost of the goods and transportation expenses up to the loading port, and is critical for the effective operation of the service," he stated.
He also noted that the NCS is aware of concerns from stakeholders regarding the ongoing collection of the 1 percent Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS) fee.
The statement emphasized, "This fee is a regulatory charge aimed at supporting Nigeria’s Destination Inspection Scheme, in addition to the 4 percent FOB charge."
The NCS expressed its commitment to addressing all concerns raised by stakeholders through continued dialogue with the Federal Ministry of Finance. It called on all stakeholders to adhere to the directive, which was developed after thorough consultation with relevant parties and organizations.
The NCS acknowledged the significant role that stakeholder contributions have played in formulating and realizing the NCSA 2023.
