In an effort to maintain law and order throughout Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has voiced significant concerns regarding a proposed nationwide protest organized by the "Take It Back Movement," deeming the demonstration poorly planned.
The police urged the organizers to reconsider the protest, as it coincides with the celebration honoring the contributions of the law enforcement agency to Nigeria's unity.
The police emphasized that this protest, which is set to occur in various states, including the Federal Capital Territory, on Monday, falls on a date recognized by the federal government as National Police Day, raising doubts about the motivations behind the demonstration.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police recognized the constitutional right of Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests but criticized the timing, labeling it as “ill-timed” and “mischievous.”
The event is expected to attract high-ranking dignitaries, both nationally and internationally, such as foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.
Adejobi remarked, “This prestigious event will gather important figures from various sectors… however, the reasoning for conducting a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and seen as a willful and unpatriotic act that could tarnish the reputation of the Nigeria Police and the country at large.”
“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organizers to abandon this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous. The NPF, under the guidance of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, while reaffirming the dedication of the NPF to fulfill its responsibilities in compliance with the law and respecting citizens' rights, encourages all organizers of the planned protest, as well as individuals wishing to participate, to pursue dialogue by engaging the relevant governmental institutions to communicate their demands.”
