The Federal Government has launched a groundbreaking initiative as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at delivering 77,400 social housing units throughout Nigeria and establishing new Renewed Hope Cities in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano to address the nation's housing shortfall.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, in a recent statement.
Discussing the ministry's responsibilities and the significance of external collaboration, Ata remarked, “The primary duty of the ministry is to provide mass housing for Nigerians, and we welcome the possibility of collaborating with Ms. Allen Le and Partners International Investment Consulting Joint Company to achieve this objective.”
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to tackling housing issues through substantial investments and partnerships.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the ministry plans to build 3,000 housing units in both Lagos, Abuja, and Kano for the Renewed Hope Cities, and 250 units in each of Nigeria's 36 states for the Estates, he stated.
Outlining the ambitious social housing initiative, the minister revealed: “Additionally, we will provide 77,400 housing units nationwide, with 100 units in each of the 774 local government areas.”
Related News includes the government planning to sell 753 housing units and introducing 10,000 homes specifically for healthcare workers.
Ata stressed the need for clear collaboration: “We need to understand exactly how we can work together. Please submit a formal proposal to the ministry detailing how you wish to collaborate with us. We look forward to identifying the specific areas of cooperation,” he conveyed to the visiting delegation.
Importantly, the minister indicated that a substantial proportion of the new housing will cater to vulnerable Nigerians: “30 percent of the 77,400 social housing units will be allocated to non-income Nigerians,” he said, praising “President Tinubu for sticking to the 30 percent commitment, even when he was suggested to lower it to 20 percent.”
The delegation, led by Allen Ke Nam of SV-NED Incorporated, demonstrated a strong interest in investing in the housing sector, especially in creating affordable housing. Nam sought land from the government to support their investment and highlighted the socio-economic advantages of the partnership.
“This collaboration will foster job creation and skill acquisition as new construction techniques are introduced during the building process,” Nam noted.
The Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, also welcomed the initiative and expressed hope for the potential collaboration, assuring full support from the Ministry to the delegation.
