LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State Government issued a warning on Sunday to traders at Alabarago Market, indicating that the market could face closure if they do not adhere to the state's environmental regulations within the next 24 hours.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this statement while addressing the press following his inspection of Alabarago Market and several other locations in the state.
Wahab noted that the market had previously been closed last year due to environmental violations and warned that further action would be taken if the traders did not clean up the area within the stipulated time.
“We have been to Alabarago before last year, and had to shut down the market to enforce compliance. Unfortunately, we may have to revisit that decision, but by tomorrow evening, we will assess whether to proceed with closure,” he stated.
He expressed concern that the market has become a dumping ground for waste, obstructing roads and blocking drainage systems.
“They have agreed to clear everything, and if they do not comply by tomorrow evening, we will take appropriate measures to penalize them,” he added.
In relation to Sallah celebrations, Wahab encouraged residents of Lagos to take responsibility for maintaining their environment. “Keep your surroundings clean during and after Sallah.
Manage your waste properly and allow PSP operators to collect it for you. Let us celebrate responsibly by taking care of our environment,” he urged.
